Taking place next month, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show is highlighting its sustainability ethos, with more gardens revealed for this year’s show putting it at the forefront.

Announced at its annual Spring Conference yesterday, the society will be giving new life to old show gardens, with its ‘RHS Chelsea Repurposed: Feature Garden’, made almost entirely out of repurposed materials from past gardens.

Designed by Cityscape’s Darryl Moore, with Toby Magee, this garden will reuse key elements from show gardens dating back as far as 2010.

Including two corten steel columns, originally featured in Andy Sturgeon’s 2010 The Daily Telegraph Garden. As well as a recycled Islamic-inspired fountain, which first appeared in Tom Massey’s Lemon Tree Trust Garden in 2018.

Aligning with the theme of sustainability and recycling, the garden’s planting will include drought-tolerant species, all planted in crushed concrete and sand salvaged from demolished buildings.

“Every element of the garden will go on to enjoy yet another new life that continues to benefit both people and wildlife,” says the RHS.

Also announced yesterday was UBS will be supporting four nurseries – Kent Wildflower Seeds, Caley Brothers, Kitchen Garden Plant Centre and She Grows Veg – with a £10,000 grant.

The ‘A Day on the Nursery: Insights Into Life as a Grower’ exhibit will be designed by Rosy Hardy – experienced Chelsea exhibitor, garden designer, author and owner of Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants; and Emma Tipping – garden designer, 2023 RHS Chelsea gold medal winner and Pro Landscaper 30 Under 30 winner.

UBS Group executive board lead for sustainability and impact and UK CEO, Bea Martin, says the exhibit which is being built by landscape company, Topoforma, aims to promote better sustainable growing practices.

The society also recently announced a new sustainability award at Chelsea this year, as well as a new award judged entirely by children from across London.

The Chelsea Flower Show will run from 21 – 25 May this year.
