The Green Party has, today, launched its general election manifesto, in which it pledges to “bring nature back to life”.
Come election day (4 July), the party is striving to elect four Green MPs, stand a candidate everywhere, and get its largest ever vote share.
The Green Party manifesto draws attention to the UK’s current status as one of the world’s most nature-depleted countries.
It states that elected Greens will campaign to rectify this by introducing a new Rights of Nature Act, giving legal protection to nature and through the conservation and improvement of biodiversity and soil health.
The party also says it will make 30 by 30, the government’s pledge to protect 30% of land and seas by 2030 for nature, its “highest priority.”
As well as extending the public’s access to green space and waterways close to their homes with a new English Right to Roam Act.
The manifesto also says Green MPs will press for an immediate end to the emergency authorisation of bee-killing pesticides, and will campaign to enact a new Clean Air (Human Rights) Act.
The Green Party is also pledging to push schools to involve children in growing, preparing and cooking food, as part of the core curriculum.
Farming and food pledges do not stop there, as the manifesto also outlines a commitment to boost financial support for farmers – by almost triple – as they transition to nature-friendly farming.
