Plans to turn a former brownfield site into the largest new public park in the south west for 50 years have been approved.

South Gloucestershire Council has approved the revised masterplan for Brabazon, a new neighbourhood in South Gloucestershire and Bristol, being built by YTL Developments on the former Filton Airfield.

Plans will see Brabazon expand to over six thousand new homes of mixed tenure, from rental apartments, to properties for first-time-buyers, and properties for retirement living.

As well as up to two thousand student accommodation spaces- ‘affordable’ homes should make up over 25% of the properties being built.

Plans also include the development of a new 86 acre site, featuring a multitude of parks, lakes and open spaces, designed to encourage community connectivity and engagement.

With new retail opportunities, eating establishments and public spaces on offer, Brabazon will be a hub for culture, creativity and entertainment, says YTL Developments.

Planning and development director for YTL Developments says: “This decision paves the way for YTL Developments to build the new homes, offices, schools and community facilities we all need, and to do so in a way that is environmentally and economically sustainable.”

He goes on to say: “If we are to tackle the climate crisis, we need to build more sustainable homes in the right places. Brabazon is on brownfield land along existing public transport corridors. Maximising its potential will ease pressure on the greenbelt.”

With the first phase of new homes on schedule to reach completion before the end of 2024, and the second phase due to complete in 2025.
