The line-up for this year’s RHS Chelsea All About Plants category has been announced, featuring gardens with a twist that offer a different take on the story of a garden.

The category which is supported by Project Giving Back, will include an edible skate park, a growing for gut health garden and a tropical forest full of rare and unusual plants.

The Planet Good Earth Garden

Featuring 100% edible plants, the Planet Good Earth Garden by Betongpark & Urban Organic will be the Show’s first edible skate park, with a two tonne granite skate ramp nestled amongst its planting.

Intended to highlight the positive impact of outdoor learning in a natural setting for young people.

The garden will be relocated to Black Mountains College near Hay on Wye in June 2024 where it will be the core of a new community-focused educational space.

 

The Size of Wales Garden

Opting for a less transitional planting palette typically seen at RHS Chelsea, The Size of Wales Garden designed by Daniel Bristow will feature over 300 different plant species, many of which are rarely seen at the show.

The planting will be a reflection of the number of tree species that can occur in just one hectare of tropical forest.

The garden will be relocated to Treborth Botanic Garden, North Wales where it can mature and be visited by the public at any time.

 

The Pulp Friction: Growing Skills Garden

Inspired by the smoothie bikes that founded Pulp Friction, the garden designed by Will Dutch and Tin-Tin Azure-Marxen, Dutch Landscape Archite will represent an inclusive space that fosters diversity and equality.

At the central point stands a three metre tall hoop constructed from recycled fire hoses donated by Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Services.

The garden will be relocated to Bestwood, Nottingham to be used as a community garden.

 

The Sue Ryder Grief Kind Garden

A safe and peaceful sanctuary layered with plants chosen for their sensory properties to connect people to the space, designed by Katherine Holland.

The garden’s centre has been arranged to resemble three people in conversation about memories of their loved ones.

The design was inspired by the garden’s post-show home, Sue Ryder’s St John’s Hospice, Bedford.

 

The Bowel Research UK Microbiome Garden

The garden designed by Chriss Hull and Side Hill focuses on the health of people, plants and all life, taking inspiration from human cultures that have tended thriving ecosystems.

With edible planting chosen for its ability to safeguard against a myriad of bowel-related ailments, fostering both biodiversity and nourishment.

The garden will be relocated to the Schumacher College in Devon.

 

The Panathlon Joy Garden

Influenced by Panathlon’s objectives to inspire inclusivity and empowerment; enable accessibility; normalise difference and create confidence.

The garden designed by Penelope Walker, will feature served tree stems and undulating mounds to allow for an abundance of vibrant planting and a winding path through the centre.

The garden is being relocated to the Majorie McClure school in Bromley, South London.

 

Helena Pettit, director of shows, commercial and innovation at the RHS says; “There is such a broad spectrum of ideas running through the All About Plants gardens this year and it’s great to see new takes on old trends coming to life in the designs.
“Whether you garden for your own health, the health of the planet or just for the joy of it, these gardens have something for everyone with inspiration for gardeners to try something new.”

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show runs from 21 – 25 May 2024.
