A new guide to improve the design and development of streets across Greater Manchester has launched in a bid to improve green spaces.

The Streets for All Design Guide, part of the Greater Manchester Streets for All Strategy sets out guidance and standards for how streets will look, feel and function in the coming years.

The guide will work to inform designs with the intent to improve safety and accessibility for everyone, as well as introducing greener and more comfortable spaces.

While also working to support the implementation of the Bee Network- Greater Manchester’s ambition to fully integrate a London-style public transform system.

The technical design guide has been co-developed by Transport for Greater Manchester together with the 10 local authorities across the county.

With approval from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), the guide is set to become a key tool for professionals involved in the development of streets across the city-region.

Active Travel commissioner, Dame Sarah Storey says the guide works to “ensure all streets are welcoming and safe, with more planted areas to provide pleasant and accessible places for all ages.”

She goes on to say “high-quality public spaces can also help local-communities and businesses thrive.”

The guide has been designed to focus on making the best use of street space by creating a better balance between the different functionalities of community streets.

Projects across the region are already using the Streets for All approach to designs, including the redevelopment of Market Street in Farnworth, Bolton.

Improvement works for the project include wider, smoother pavements to improve accessibility, a new and improved public space at Council Square and the installment of a greener and more welcoming street environment, with additional trees being planted.

The guide will also be integrated into the £1bn City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement programme.
